Gifted to the RHS by Lady Anne Berry in 1988, the garden consisted of a house, the 3.2ha (8 acre) garden around the house and 13ha (32 acres) of pastureland. Since then, it has evolved and developed into the garden our visitors see and enjoy today.

It is a vibrant community and people in the town, proud of their heritage, can often be seen dressed in costume for re-enactments, festivals and celebration. One of the highlights of the year is the Mayfair. A four day event which sees the crowning of the May Queen, a carnival procession, the round the tree race and the fiercely fought Torridge Cup football match with a number of other traditions still carried forward, as well as markets, stalls and a fair to entertain between the main events.
As a Cavalier town, Great Torrington played a significant role in the English Civil War (Battle of Great Torrington 1646). History surrounds Great Torrington and the great battle of 1646 saw Lord Hopton (Royalist) and his forces defeated by Sir Thomas Fairfax, marking the end of the resistance in the West Country.
The River Torridge flows through the valley below and is famed for having been home to Tarka the Otter in Henry Williamsons stunning 1927 Novel set in the country of the Two Rivers (Torridge and Taw).
