The oldest building is the castle which dates back to the Domesday Book and was once the largest castle in Devon. In the 1870's the coming of the railway line made a huge difference to the town and encouraged far more houses to be built. To this day changes are still taking place, with more new housing being built and quite possibly a return to a daily rail service to Exeter.
The town offers a wide range of amenities including a recently completed swimming pool complex, several supermarkets, primary and secondary schools, a golf course and a variety of local sports clubs. Okehampton is quickly accessible from the A30 dual-carriageway and the Cathedral and University City of Exeter is approx 25 miles with its intercity rail and motorway links.
